VaHi ATLetic FC continued their winning form on the road in the ADASL D3 league and delivered a “manita”* (5-0) to Clarkston FC. The game was played at 11 am at Clarkston’ home field, Wade Walker park in Stone Mountain, GA.
ATLetic dominatedthe game from the get go and they had the first opportunity to score at the 5th minute but a beautifully taken free kick hit the inside of the keeper’s left post. ATLetic nevertheless kept pressuring and found the first goal of the match when Deye Goyon tapped a cross from left winger Ron Calle in the 25th minute. Despite dominating, ATLEtic’s possession game was not as fluid as could have been and that allowed Clarkston to put some pressure by sending long balls and using the pace of their forwards to ask questions on ATLetic’s defense in a particularly short field at Wade Walker. One of those situations required ATLetic’s Scott Stilwel GK to leave his small box to masterfully deflect a dangerous shot.
On the 2nd half ATLetic came out determined to impose their possession-style football to defend with the ball and creating scoring chances. Felipe Lobelo, Jose Baltazar and Nicolas Garcia started passing the ball and moving without it much better, dominating the midfield and connecting with their forwards and wingers. Their reliance on the passing game proved successful almost immediately as they created chance after chance to score. The second goal of the match came on the 60th minute courtesy of ATLetic’s high pressure when Deye GoNyon stole a ball from the defense and blasted a screamer pass the keeper. Excellent reward for Daye’s hard work and the team pressure and aggressive mentality.
ATletic kept the ball in the ground looking for spaces in Clarkston’s defense as they got tired of chasing the ball. The 3rd goal of the match came in the 7oth minute after a beatiful combination in the middle by Lobelo and Baltazar, who threaded a ball to Aaron King through the middle of the defense. The forward finished as he usually does, with power and precision to beat the keeper.
The fourth goal came after a 1-2 play between Lobelo and Goyon who made the overlap run in the right flank to cross the ball to Delv Clarke who in turn assisted King for his second of the day.
The cherry in the cake was again the result of ATLetic’s high pressure and in particular Clarke’s all-around game and intensity. The man borned in Birmingham, UK has pace, superb technique and football IQ. He also runs to every ball and that effort paid off when he stole a ball from Clarkston’s defense and unselfishly assisted King again for his first hat-trick for the team.
In the end a dominating performance by VaHi ATLetic FC. The team knows ADASL is long and treacherous journey but winning early in the season and on the road makes it so much rewarding. The team has wind in their backs but realizes they will face increasingly tougher opponents in their schedule so keeping calm and collected will be a must to keep their winning form.
Stay tuned for future game reports! Next Sunday 10/21/2012 VaHi ATLetic FC will face Pelicans White on the road at Point University field at 1 pm.
