On the heels of a disappointing early exit in the Perrin Cup at the hands of Georgia Tech Club (0-1), the team faced a steep challenge this weekend hosting league leaders Majestic (12-2-0). The first meeting this season resulted in a 2-1 win for Majestic.
Majestic controlled most of the possession in the first half with crisp passing and spacing but ATLetic was sustaining pressure adequately and venturing forward as the half progressed. The first goal came in one of those situations ATLetic was in the attacking phase of the game. A shot stopped by Majestic’s keeper and quick goal kick led to a devastating counter-attack on the right wing. ATLetic’s midfielders were not able to stop the ball early and the cross was finished on the left side for the goal that ultimately decided the game
(Recent results in the league have made the relegation race much tighter and now ATLetic sits in 7th spot, 2 points clear of the relegation zone but with two games to make up)
The smash n’ grab goal did not change ATletic’s game plan. In the second half, ATLetic improved possession while maintaining defensive stability and balance. ATLetic created two clear goal scoring chances from open play, one from a free kick and a corner kick but Majestic’s keeper came out big when needed.
Overall, a solid performance against a team that had only dropped 4 out of 42 points and remains undefeated this season.
Man of the Match : GK Ian “the Wall” Anderson, commanding the box and keeping ATLetic’s chances to equalize the game alive
