VaHi ATLetic FC suffered a heavy defeat in the ADASL Division 2 season opener against Little Five FC by a score of four goals to nil. Little Five deserved to win the match as they created more chances and were more effective. However, the score difference was perhaps a little too large for what both teams showed in the top-class GSP field.
ATLetic created their best chance in the game within the first 10 minutes when a long pass by center-back Jacob Schutz found a streaking Scotty Navin on the right. The winger delivered a perfect chip to Brandon O’toole but the rookie striker was not able to put it pass the keeper despite a decent attempt heading in it down.
Teams traded chances for most of the game’s first half with Little Five dominating possession while ATLetic’s collapsed well in defense and counter-attacked. Skipper Felipe Lobelo was forced to play on goal during the first half, but he was able to keep the 0 on his back relying on some strong defending by holding mid Brendan Fels, center defenders Florentino Aguilar and Schutz and fullbacks Danny Battaglia and Nathan Eppinger
The second half however, saw Little Five capitalize on some good passing, finding space in the left flank. ATLetic’s defense was unable to clear the loose ball which was hooked by an attacker from short distance to put it in the upper netting and open the score.
Down a goal ATLetic, dominated possession stringing some good combination play in the middle between Tolu Afolabi, John King, Mika Turner, Francisco Pasiano, Andrew Mugan and Hayden Kaminski, supported in defense by Milos “the Kaiser” Kvasay and Folusho Erogbogo in the wing – only to produce some half chances that were well controlled by Little Five’s defenders and keeper.
With ATLetic devoting more resources to attack, space opened up for Little Fives counter-attacks. In the 75th minute their strategy paid off when again space was found on the left flank and the forward’s low shot beat ATLetic’s keeper Scott Stilwell.
A similar scenario occurred for the third goal when a tight angle shot bounced of Stilwell hand and into the post to creep, the ball inching inside the line.
In the final play of the game with ATLetic trying to score of a corner kick, another counter-attack delivered the nail in the coffin for VaHi when Lobelo was unable to control the defense’s high clearance.
A disappointing result for VaHi ATLetic’s season opener. They will be looking to bounce back in the next game when they face a young and energetic KSA 18’s. The result stressed some basic premises of ADASL soccer: details matter and lack effectiveness to put away chances comes back to haunt you. A lot of new faces in the team means sometime will be required to gel and develop as a unit and next Sunday is the perfect chance to improve on those long-term goals.
